Tohoku University Technology: CoCrMo Alloy and Its Manufacturing Method: T11-101

Achieve high strength, high ductility, and high fatigue strength.

In recent years, with the progress of aging, biomaterials that can replace bodily functions have garnered significant attention. Co-Cr-Mo based alloys used as biomaterials play an important role as materials for artificial joints due to their excellent corrosion resistance and wear resistance compared to other metal materials. Many of these are cast alloys standardized by ASTM F75; however, cast materials generally have coarse microstructures and often contain casting defects, resulting in poor strength and ductility. Therefore, it is necessary to improve mechanical properties through microstructural control using plastic processing and heat treatment. This invention makes it possible to provide a Co-Cr-Mo based alloy with high strength, high ductility, and high fatigue strength as a biomaterial. The alloy contains a specific composition of Co/Cr/Mo/N and is characterized by fine crystalline grain structure and a high density of dislocations. Through skillful composition and microstructural control, it is possible to achieve a combination of high strength, high ductility, and high fatigue strength that surpasses conventional Co-Cr-Mo based alloys.
